Bridge Day
One Day A Year- Don't Miss It!
Bridge Day is when we jump off the New River Gorge Bridge. Not all of us- most people that show up are spectators. Just a few actually participate in the BASE jumping part of Bridge Day. Lucky for the rest of us, there's plenty of party to go around.
Bridge Day is the world's biggest extreme sports festival. A description would include the words "adrenaline", "spectacle", and "funnel cake". But that's about as far as descriptions go. Bridge Day is an event that had to be experienced to be believed.
Bridge Day Facts
- Bridge Day is always, always, always on the 3rd Saturday in October.
- The New River Gorge Bridge is 876 feet from water to arch, giving jumpers about 7 seconds to open their chutes.
- More people come to the bridge to rappel on Bridge Day than to BASE jump, and the vast majority of people just come to watch.
- BASE jumping is legal on Bridge Day if you qualify for a permit. Jumpers may jump as many times as they can during the festivities.
- Bridge Day has been going on for 30 years, and it's the largest one day festival in West Virginia.
Raft trips are a popular way to see Bridge Day. All of the gorge's outfitters run multiple raft trips on the New River during the festival. Other ways to see Bridge Day are from the deck, or with a special "Down Under" pass that gets you access to the Landing Zone.
